The Technology and Design department is splendidly equipped and offers a quality educational experience to all pupils, regardless of ability level.

We aim to develop the technological capabilities and potential of every boy and while doing so to increase his ability to:

1. Apply knowledge and understanding

2. Communicate effectively using various design techniques

3. Manipulate a range of materials and components to make products

4. Use energy to drive and control these products

All Key Stage 3 pupils will work through the programme of study to meet the requirements of the NI curriculum.

An integral part of that programme is to provide each Year 10 pupil with the opportunity to achieve CCEA ‘Certification of Competence’ in ‘I.T. : Measurement and Control’.

We believe that our Key Stage 3 programme prepares pupils well for Key Stage 4 study at GCSE level on either of the following options:

GCSE Technology and Design (CCEA) or

GCSE Resistant Materials Technology (AQA)

Both of these programmes offer two entry levels catering for varying pupil ability and each consists of a coursework component (60%) and a final examination (40%).

Successful completion of these courses provides the ideal foundation for progression to Post 16 studies.

In addition to set courses at Key Stage 4 we also offer enhancement programmes (the most recent innovation being the introduction of traditional Bog Oak carving) in order to widen the experience and opportunities for some of our pupils.

Post 16 Opportunities At Post 16 the Department currently offers a choice of either:

1. AVCE in MANUFACTURING (double award) which is a two year course and equates to 2 traditional ‘A’ Levels.

2. GNVQ Intermediate MANUFACTURING which is a one year course and equates to 4/5 GCSE’s.

The department boasts excellent success rates and our pupils have progressed to University and to high quality employment.

We are at present investigating further options of Post 16 courses in line with the latest curriculum requirement.

These are likely to include ‘A’ Level Technology and/or Engineering and BTEC First Diploma in Engineering.
