The Careers Education and Guidance Programme helps students to develop skills, attitudes and competence which will enable them:
(i) to be effective in a variety of adult occupations and roles, and
(ii) to successfully manage the transition from school to adult working life.
In Years 12, 13 and 14, all students have time-tabled careers provision. Classes are taught in the Careers Suite where students have access to services providing information relating to careers, job opportunities and training.
Additionally, prospectus for all third level colleges and universities are readily available.
Guidance interviews with careers teachers and also with officers from the Training and Employment Agency, help students make the best possible decisions in preparation for life after GCSE, GNVQ, AVCE or Advanced level.
During the past number of years mutually beneficial links have been established with local industry. The careers programme ensures that all students will have the opportunity to:
(i) Participate in work experience in Year 12 and when studying GNVQ Intermediate and AVCE courses.
(ii) Participate in an ‘Industry Matters Interview Skills’ day.
(iii) Sample an industrial visit to a local firm.
(iv) Partake in careers talks by invited guests from industry and commerce.
(v) Participate in the Construction Industry Training Board’s ‘job sampling day’.
(vi) Take part in a Study Skills Programme.
Students will also have the opportunity to attend Open Days at Universities and Colleges of Further Education.
Over the past 3 years our Year 10 and Year 11 students have participated in the Q.U.B. “Taster Programme”.
Established links with both ‘Queen’s and University of Ulster’ will greatly assist our 6th Formers in making ‘informed’ choices on University courses.
